Since the dawn of the Internet, people have sculpted active niches where they can express ideas , build and exchange dedicated derivative content, and disclose a common passion for a particular show, film, literature work, universe, video game, person, or hobby. These avid groups of individuals have become recognized as fandom in time. All is really a fandom. Only search online for your favorite TV show and you'll be sure to discover a wealth of all kinds of fan-generated content.
Sometimes, this infectious strength is directed towards the characters that exist in each universe (fictional or otherwise). The direct and indirect relations between these characters are where the "shipping" flourishes. Shipping means desiring a (romantic or platonic) relationship between characters. Often, as is the case with Mulder and Scully from the X-Files, these ships are true to the source material, but sometimes these ships are not directly written to the source.
