The United Arab Emirates launched their first-ever rocket flight to Mars on July 19 with success. The spacecraft, called Al Amal, or Hope in English, is expected to hit the red planet by February next year and stay in orbit for one entire Martian year – or nearly two years on Earth.

The UAE is just the seventh country in history to try to send a Mars mission. In the 1960s and 1970s the big two, the Soviet Union (now Russia) and the U.S., first sent successful probes. Although Japan and China have sent missions to Mars, only the European Space Agency and India were successful in this regard.
