If you seem to still hear of vehicles being recalled for unsafe or faulty components, it is because you are! The number of NHTSA recalls issued has been increasing significantly thanks to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) forcing manufacturers to recall more vehicles in the last few years. Before 2014, car recalls ranged from 10 to 30 million cars affected per year for automobile defects. We have seen record-setting safety recalls of 50 million or more vehicles since 2014. The timeline of this infographic paves the way for the biggest recalls of all time and their cost to automotive health, not just in fines and penalties but also in human life.

The biggest automotive recall occurred in 1981 when the Ford Motor Company was forced to recall 21 million vehicles due to a faulty parking gear that would cause the transmission to slip backwards after being moved to park. This car park fault caused 6,000 collisions and 1,710 deaths, killing 98 people.

Rather of recalling Ford's cars, they sent out warning notices to over 21 million Ford vehicle owners. Such warning labels told them to set the parking brake before leaving the car and switching off the ignition. That way of fixing the issue saved Ford just $10 million in printing and postage costs, rather than the much higher costs they would face.
