As of January 2019, Australia had 21.74 million Internet users, comprising 87 per cent of the Australian population. Every day 93 per cent of those internet users use the internet. Internet users in Australia spend an average of 5.5 hours a day using internet services with about 3 hours watching video services and television broadcasts, about 45 minutes video music and about 1.5 hours using social media. Data downloaded from mobile devices rose by 40 per cent from June 2017 to June 2018.

With 18 million active users of social media websites (69 per cent of the population) as of January 2019, social media is now an integral part of Australian society. Facebook is the website's most popular social media network, with about 16 million monthly users. Around 90 per cent of Australians have direct smartphone access. This was more than three times the rate of access for smartphones in 2008.
