The Math Behind Social Distancing As we await the creation of a COVID-19 vaccine by scientists and health care practitioners, there is another, more readily accessible resource available to us. The first line of protection for preventing an infectious disease like COVID-19 is social distancing, described as steps taken to minimize physical contact.

That's because when people cough, sneeze, or touch surfaces on which the virus lives, those infections spread. Today's infographic shows how a reduction in social exposure can potentially prevent the spread of infection, to help us understand the effect such steps can actually have.

Theoretical possibilities The equations used to build today's infographic come from the University of California San Diego's Signer Laboratory, a stem cell research laboratory located at the Moores Cancer Center. Using a summation model allows for estimating the number of new infections over a span of 30 days, through three scenarios.
