During the last two decades drug reform has been complex. It has been considered an illegal narcotic drug in the United States for over 60 years, and since 1961, when most of the developed nations signed the internationally recognized Single Convention on Drugs. Specific US states have started to break away from federal and international restrictions, starting with California in 1996.
Many nations have now also begun eliminating cannabis bans, beginning with Uruguay in 2016.Several US states have already legalized legal recreational cannabis and have even many legal medical cannabis laws.
