You'll be given a range of check-ups, examinations and scans as part of your antenatal treatment. As part of standard antenatal care in Australia several assessments are given to each patient. Many tests would be recommended if you or your baby are at a higher risk of developing complications or have any issues during pregnancy.

When you don't want to - it's your choice-you don't have to do any prescribed tests. Before your baby is born, you can detect several problems but not all of them. There are two key types of testing available during antenatal care: screening testing that can let you know if your baby is at a higher risk of having a problem, but can't confirm the issue with other diagnostic tests.

Your check-ups and examinations can be done in a hospital, doctor's office, or somewhere else in your neighborhood, depending on whether you're having your baby in a public or private facility, birth center, or home. This will also decide whether your GP, midwife or obstetrician is doing your check-ups. The timing and number of some of the visits and tests listed below that vary slightly depending on your choice of antenatal treatment, if you have had a previous pregnancy and whether you have any complications.
